Chapter 16

Cassie stepped out of Tessa’s jeep and took a few steps toward her house. She waited until she heard the engine fade, then walked around behind the house instead. She opened a gate that led out onto the farm that bordered the back of her property. Sebastian’s farm.

Cassie recalled the toolbox she’d spotted beside the barn. It had only taken her a moment to recognize it. It had sat on her front porch for months as Sebastian helped her fix up her house. It wasn’t unusual for him to help anyone around town. He always took the time to help people out with small projects. Especially if they couldn’t afford to hire the help for it. But had he really spent all that time fixing up Logan’s barn, and never said a word to her about it? Of course not, when would he even have the time, and he would have told her if he had. She was intrigued to find out why it was there.

Cassie walked across the field toward Sebastian’s house. As she neared the ranch-style house, she spotted some movement in the backyard. She stepped off of the field onto the grass and dodged a pile of boards. A half-built wooden gazebo caught her attention, followed by Sebastian’s frame as he knelt beside the structure. Despite the cool air, his skin looked flushed, she guessed he’d been working for quite some time. Her eyes settled on him as he leaned across the floorboards. He stretched his arm out and slammed the head of a hammer into a nail.

Cassie took a sharp breath as she watched him work. He still dazzled her in so many ways.

“Sebastian?” Cassie took a few steps closer to him and watched as his body tensed at the sound of her voice.

“Cassie.” Sebastian smiled as he got to his feet. He wiped the back of his hand across his forehead. “I’m glad you’re here. I was hoping to get some time with you today.”

“Me too.” Cassie’s heart fluttered as he looked over at her. “This is so beautiful.” She swept her gaze across the gazebo as he kissed her cheek. “Is it a special order for someone?” She ran her fingertips along the smooth wood and admired the intricate structure of the beams.

“No, not exactly. Just a favor for a friend.” Sebastian tightened his arms around her. “Do you want to have some lunch? I can take a break.”

“I’d love to, but I have to meet up with Tessa.” Cassie looked into his eyes as he tipped his head back to look at her. “We were just at the farm where Logan is living. The barn looks all fixed-up compared to the rest of the property. Have you been working on his barn?”

“No, why?” Sebastian frowned.

“I saw your toolbox there.” Cassie met his eyes.

“Oh.” Sebastian nodded. “I lent my toolbox to Bo for a couple of days, he needed a few of my tools he didn’t have, and I had enough to get me through.
